■520    ▼aMen  have  very  close,  long  lasting  relationships  that  provide  meaning  for  their  lives.  Some  of  these  relationships  are  closer  than  any  other  relationship  they  have.  These  relationships  have  helped  the  men  in  making  ethical  and  moral  decisions,  in  understanding  and  committing  to  their  marriages,  in  working  through  issues  of  separation  and  divorce,  in  making  career  changes,  and  in  traversing  the  difficulties  of  bereavement.  These  relationships  also  provided  a  sense  of  meaning  in  the  simple  experience  of  being  valued  by  the  other  and  valuing  the  other.
■520    ▼aThe  phenomenon  of  friendship  has  not  been  adequately  utilized  or  understood  in  the  practice  of  clinical  social  work.  The  theoretical  implications  that  proceed  from  the  results  of  the  study  are  explored  as  well  as  implications  for  the  practice  of  clinical  social  work.
■520    ▼aThis  is  a  phenomenological  study  into  long  term  friendships  among  men.  Structures  of  relationship,  nurturing  of  relationship,  and  meanings  of  relationship  were  explored  with  20  men  in  10  pairs  of  friends.  The  men  were  friends  for  at  least  15  years.  An  open-ended,  exploratory  interview,  as  well  as  a  follow-up  interview  was  done  with  each  participant.  Interpretations  and  themes  named  in  the  interviews  were  explored  with  the  participants  at  the  second  interview.
