요약 : The growing debate over sexuality education in this country has, at its heart, deep concern for the sexual health and well-being of young women and men. Springing from this concern are two distinct philosophies related to sexuality education; abstinence-based and comprehensive. The fervor swirling around these two distinct approaches to sex education frequently focuses on the success of each as it relates to the prevention of unplanned pregnancy, lowering rates of sexually transmitted infection, and reducing the number of adolescents engaging in sexual activity. However, an often overlooked facet of this debate involves the specific impact of sexuality education on the psychological and social well-being of young women. Research has demonstrated that within the sexuality education classroom, the psychological and social aspects of female sexual health and development are often ignored in favor of lessons pertaining to disease, pregnancy, and protection. A random sample of 439 women completed a 100 item web-based survey designed to test the hypotheses that a more comprehensive experience of formal sexuality education and a more extensive experience of formal sexuality education would be significantly related to higher levels of positive sexual self-concept, higher levels of power in relationships, and fewer reports of risky sexual behavior by young women. Results indicated that educational approach and extent did not account for a significant amount of the variance associated with power in relationships, incidence of unplanned pregnancy and sexually transmitted infection, or the number of recent sexual partners. However, educational approach and extent were found to significantly predict a small percentage of the variance associated with female sexual self-concept in this sample. The qualitative portion of the study yielded information pertaining to women's satisfaction with sexuality education. Many young women reported an increase in knowledge related to their bodies. However, there was a strong and pervasive sense of dissatisfaction with formal sex education. Women shared their frustration with an abstinence-only-until-marriage message and their struggles with feelings of fear and guilt associated with the presentation of female sexuality. Many women suggested changes pertaining to content, presentation, and timing that could increase the utility of sex education for young women.
