요약 : The public health burden of physical inactivity continues to grow in the United States. The costs associated with this burden have surpassed $76 billion, and given the growing prevalence of physical inactivity among the U.S. population these costs are expected to increase even further. As such, identifying the mechanisms by which the social environment impacts physical activity and health may aid researchers and policy makers in developing interventions and programs that promote and sustain physical activity, which in turn may lead to better health. In particular, a greater understanding of the impact of social relationships on physical activity and health may contribute to the effective design of interventions for preventing a wide array of diseases. However, given the importance of the social environment to health behaviors and the transition period from adolescence to adulthood characterized by undergraduate and graduate education, the lack of studies using a random sample of students to understand the relationships between social networks, support, physical activity, and health is surprising. To better understand the mechanisms by which the social environment influences physical activity behavior and health, this study examined the relationships between social networks, perceived social support, physical activity behavior and perceived health among a sample of 938 undergraduate and graduate university students. A cross-sectional web-based survey design was used to measure participant characteristics, perceived health status, physical activity behavior, perceived social support, and social network characteristics. Results suggest that study participants tended to have worse health than national available estimates. Additionally, sequential logistical regression findings indicate that the conceptual model guiding the analysis showed good overall classification of responses with the data suggesting that after controlling for demographic variables (educational level, race and ethnicity, and smoking status); social networks were not directly associated with health, but contributed to the overall predictive value of the model. Additionally, perceived social support and physical activity were directly associated with participants' perceived health status. Implications of study findings for university-based health promotion programs, research, and the social work profession are also presented.
