요약 : Child maltreatment research has been heavily biased towards identifying the types of people who commit abuse against children. Less emphasis has been placed on the mechanisms in the social habitats which facilitate the occurrence of such behaviors. Guided by an ecological framework and drawing from a social capital perspective, this study explores whether child maltreatment severity is directly affected by family social capital, family human capital, and family functioning. In addition, the study seeks to assess whether family functioning mediates the effects of social and human capital on child maltreatment. The sample for this study includes two groups: children and families involved with child protective services (n=188), and a group of children and families who are not involved with local child welfare authorities (n=134), matched to the first group on the basis of individual and family demographic variables. The study utilizes structural equation modeling. Results suggest the hypothesized structural pathways involving family social capital, family human capital, and family functioning account far 22% of the variance in maltreatment severity. Direct and indirect pathways between family social capital and family human capital and child maltreatment were not significant. However, better family functioning was associated with less child maltreatment. Findings are discussed in relation to their implication for child welfare assessment practices and decision making. Of specific relevance is the formation of a practice model that offers the child protective worker an ecological perspective on attachment.
