요약 : Exciting ideas are only the beginning of research. Getting the results takes thinking, planning, and action. Research leadership and management has been practiced by countless scholars, yet there is very little written about what research leaders do and how they do it. This study seeks to add to the few research studies on this topic. This research study focused primarily on established research leaders and the issues that impacted the productivity of their scholarly endeavours and careers through examining the processes, mechanisms and practices that helped them lead and manage their research projects. A secondary purpose was to discover what the research leaders considered as the major trends in academic research today and how these impacted their leadership and management of collaborative research projects.

요약 : In the course of the interviews with the research leaders, a number of issues affecting academia today were explored and how these impact the leadership of academic research.

요약 : Through a two-round modified Delphi exercise, 25 Canadian research leaders from the social sciences and humanities shared their experiences of leading research teams from 16 to over 300 members. Twenty-five research leaders participated in the first-round interviews, and nineteen of them continued to participate in the second-round mini-survey. In the first round, the research leaders provided information about what they do, how they do it, what worked for them and what lessons they have learned through their experience with collaborative research. In the second round, research leaders were asked to rate a series of statements of principles for intellectual leadership, team building leadership, and administrative management. Also included was a question asking for the proportion of time and energy spent on each of the three major leadership categories mentioned above. For many, this was the first time they had an opportunity to reflect and share on this topic.

요약 : Through this exploratory qualitative study, a better understanding and explanation of the phenomenon of research leadership and management is offered. In today's research environment, researchers are frequently asked to do more than ever before---work in larger and more diverse teams; collaborate with team members at multiple institutions, with research partners and stakeholders; and to mobilize knowledge beyond academic audiences. The multiple roles involved in the intellectual and social leadership as well as the many administrative responsibilities are explored. This research suggests a number of practices that the research leader participants found effective in pulling the research project and the research team together.
