요약 : Bivariate analyses show that one predisposing factor, three enabling factors, two need factors, and two cultural factors were significant correlates of the use of Western health care services. The results of the hierarchical multiple regression analysis indicated that the enabling factors were the most important predictors of utilization of Western health care services. Cultural factors explained the second largest portion of the variance, while both need and predisposing factors had an equal proportion but less important effect on explaining the use of Western health care services.

요약 : Secondary data analysis was used as a research design of the study. A random sample (N = 220) of South Asians aged 55 years and older in Calgary was obtained from the primary research study. The participants completed a structured telephone survey. Univariate statistics was used for descriptive purposes; while bivariate and hierarchical multiple regression analyses were used to test the hypotheses and to answer the research questions.

요약 : The South Asians belong to the second largest visible minority group in Canada, yet little research, particularly on the older adults and their health service utilization is available. In order to facilitate the service providers in serving the community better, it is important to understand the influence of culture on their level of Western health care services. This study examines the effects the cultural factors on use of health services by the aging South Asian-Canadians. Using a modified version of the Andersen-Newman service utilization model, the effects of predisposing, enabling, need, and cultural factors on the utilization of health care services were examined. Five research questions and fourteen hypotheses related to independent variables under each predicting factors were tested.

요약 : These findings indicate the importance of developing strategies for providing culturally competent care; significance of improving economic well-being of the elderly is recommended; and greater health education should be encouraged so that the users can have better and proper access to the health care services. Further research is needed to examine the interaction among the predisposing, enabling, need, and cultural factors in predicting the utilization of Western health care services.
