요약 : David and Goliath is a biblical music drama for orchestra with SATB soloists depicting one of the most exciting stories in the Bible. It is composed of seven movements, put into an arch form. The first and last movements use instruments alone to depict warfare and victory in God, respectively. The final movement includes two hymn tunes, E IN FESTE BURG and ST. ANNE, which demonstrate God's guiding hand and our victory in Him. Marches represent both Goliath in the second movement and David in the sixth. Alto and soprano soloists are used in the third and fifth movements. In the third movement uses Psalm 70 illustrates the Israelites' despair and their earnest desire for deliverance by God. The soprano soloist sings Psalm 91, which represents the hope and confidence of the Israelites based on the great things God has done.

요약 : The fourth movement is the climax of David and Goliath and represents a shift from hopelessness to hope. The hymn tune EIN FESTE BURG is used as an orchestral theme upon which variations in retrograde are based. The tune is a symbol of God's hidden hand being revealed in the conflict between David and Goliath. Two unifying features in this work are this hymn tune and a horizontal tritone relationship. The tune appears in clear statements as well as more subtle and hidden instances, and the tritone is used to portray Goliath.
