요약 : The final chapter identifies and evaluates the implicit and explicit criteria operative in the assessment of the theories of the self by these three thinkers, and then utilizes these criteria to construct a theory of the self relevant for the oppressed that exemplifies a dialectical harmony of self and other. This theory takes the form of a holistic-relational interpretation of the Christian imago dei doctrine that maintains this dialectical balance between self and other and demonstrates the usefulness of the dialectical-harmony viewpoint not only for fundamental ethical analysis but also for religious anthropology.

요약 : The first three philosophical and social theoretical chapters expound, criticize, and cumulatively compare Levinas's view of the self as brother's keeper, Spivak's postcolonial perspective on the reality of marginalized subjects, and Ricoeur's view of the capable self in dialectical harmony with others. All three thinkers agree upon the embodied nature, the intersubjective nature, and the ethical nature of the self, while diverging on the notion of alterity and the self-other relationship. This dissertation argues that Ricoeur's position overall provides better resources for the oppressed in regards to the self-other relationship than the theories of Spivak and Levinas, because his theory emphasizes the capacities and self-assertion of the self, yet still keeps this pole of the self in a dialectical harmony with the other.

요약 : This dissertation is a constructive theoretical reflection upon the self in light of the tension between self-assertion and deference to the moral claims of others. Situated within philosophical and religious anthropology, this dissertation critically expounds theories of the self by Paul Ricoeur, Emmanuel Levinas, and Gayatri C. Spivak. Drawing on their insights, the dissertation constructs a theory of the self that takes account of the problems oppressed people face as they endeavor to achieve a balance between self-assertion and care for others. The thesis of this dissertation is that a theory of the self attains theoretical and practical relevance for the oppressed when it represents the tension between self-assertion and other-care as a dialectical harmony. When one or the other side of this dialectical tension is weakened, a theory of the self loses the ethical resources needed to resist oppression or to respond to the suffering of others.
