■520    ▼aIn  response  to  the  situation  of  the  community  of  Hebrews,  the  author  presented  his  christological  argument,  emphasizing  that  the  Son  of  God,  who  is  the  heavenly  high  priest,  is  superior  to  any  other  representative  of  the  Old  Testament  to  whom  God  revealed  himself  in  the  past  in  the  introduction.  The  superiority  of  the  Son  of  God  was  stressed  in  the  following  passages:  Heb  1:5-14;  2:5-18;  3:1-6;  4:14-5:10;  and  7:1-10:18.  The  major  emphasis  of  the  author  of  Hebrews  concerning  Christology  is  that  the  Son  of  God  as  the  heavenly  high  priest  fulfilled  and  superseded  the  Mosaic  and  levitical  sacrificial  system.
■520    ▼aThe  critical  analysis  of  the  exhortative  passages  (Heb  2:1-4;  3:7-4:13;  5:11-6:20;  and  10:19-12:29)  showed  that  the  recipients  of  Hebrews  were  under  persecution  and  were  in  spiritual  danger  of  relapsing  into  the  beliefs  and  practices  of  Judaism.  The  author  of  Hebrews,  therefore,  responded  to  their  situation  and  encouraged  them  to  hold  fast  the  Christian  belief  and  hope  without  wavering.  The  author  of  Hebrews  encouraged  the  Jewish  Christians  in  house  churches  who  were  in  danger  of  relapsing  into  Judaism  to  avoid  persecution,  to  run  the  race  of  faith  with  endurance,  and  bear  the  disgrace  Jesus  bore  by  reminding  them  of  Jesus'  death  "outside  the  camp"  for  them.
■520    ▼aThe  purpose  of  this  dissertation  was  to  argue  that  the  crisis  of  Jewish  Christians  in  Rome  has  correlation  with  the  Christology  which  is  developed  in  Hebrews.  Through  a  critical  reading,  three  observations  were  made  about  the  community  of  Hebrews.  Despite  an  alternate  view  regarding  the  community  of  Hebrews  as  Gentile  Christians,  the  traditional  view  regarding  the  community  of  Hebrews  as  Jewish  Christians  was  shown  to  have  supporting  evidence.  The  community  of  Hebrews  already  had  experienced  the  persecution  under  Claudius  (A.D.  49)  and  anticipated  the  coming  persecution  under  Nero.  A  more  serious  risk  the  community  of  Hebrews  faced  was  the  confrontation  with  Judaism.  They  were  in  danger  of  drifting  away,  throwing  away  their  confidence  in  the  Christian  belief,  or  shrinking  back  from  their  commitment  to  Christ.
