■520    ▼aPastoral  transition  is  a  difficult  proposition.  However,  transition  involving  a  long-  term  pastor  increases  the  degree  of  difficulty.  It  is  of  the  utmost  importance  for  long-term  pastors  and  governing  boards  to  work  together  to  develop  a  succession  plan  to  minimize  the  potential  for  negative  impact.  The  research  demonstrates  that  a  good  succession  plan  and  proper  implementation  of  that  plan  not  only  sustains  the  momentum  of  a  ministry  but  may  also  increase  its  momentum.
■520    ▼aThe  purpose  of  this  thesis  project  is  to  examine  succession  methodologies  in  order  to  answer  the  research  question,  Is  there  a  proven  methodology  for  pastoral  succession  in  churches  with  long-term  pastorates?  A  long-term  pastor  is  defined  as  a  one  who  has  served  as  the  pastor  of  a  single  church  for  a  period  of  ten  years  or  more.
■520    ▼aThe  thesis  project  employed  a  survey-based  research  methodology,  along  with  extensive  interviews  of  pastors  and  other  leaders  who  had  gone  through  a  pastoral  transition.  Surveys  were  completed  online  between  July  2012  and  December  2012.  Of  200  contacts,  seventy  surveys  (32%)  were  completed.  Nineteen  people  indicated  they  were  approaching  transition,  while  fifty-one  had  already  experienced  a  transition.  From  the  fifty-one  persons  who  had  gone  through  a  transition,  twenty-two  were  selected  for  extensive  interviews.  The  research  concluded  that  a  solid  succession  plan  provides  the  best  chance  for  a  fruitful  pastoral  transition.
■520    ▼aThis  study  discovered  that  there  are  three  primary  ways  that  pastoral  transition  takes  place:  pastoral  appointment,  pastoral  or  governing  board  recommendation,  and  a  search  committee  process.  Each  methodology  can  be  effectively  implemented.  The  current  condition  of  the  ministry  determines  which  methodology  will  be  most  effective.  However,  this  research  generally  determined  pastoral  appointment  and  board  recommendation  to  be  more  effective  than  a  search  committee  process.
