■520    ▼aThe  narrative  of  concern  is  the  exhaustion  and  loss  of  spiritual  vitality  many  members  of  Episcopal  Church  feel  as  they  struggle  to  maintain  the  current  church  system  in  the  face  of  declining  numbers.  From  2007  to  2011  the  Episcopal  Church  lost  319  congregations  and  almost  50,000  members  a  year--or  11%  of  its  members  in  five  years.  Meanwhile,  average  Sunday  attendance  declined  more  than  10%  in  54%  of  churches.1  As  the  number  of  active  members  and  financial  resources  declines,  the  gap  between  the  expectations  embodied  in  the  common  notion  of  church  and  current  reality  widens,  requiring  people  to  work  harder  and  give  more  to  maintain  the  system.  Programs  to  "fix"  the  problem  demand  even  more  time  and  money,  and  many  fail  to  produce  the  hoped-for  results.  Some  people  give  up  and  leave;  others  stay  but  are  exhausted  and  dispirited.  Dedicated  clergy  and  laity  fail  to  find  the  depth  of  spiritual  life  or  the  engagement  in  God's  mission  that  they  desire.
■520    ▼aThis  project  uses  the  concepts  of  organizational  systems  theory  and,  in  particular,  the  Theory  U  process  and  the  spiritual  practice  of  discernment  to  provide  church  leaders  with  a  process  to  help  their  members  envision  and  implement  new  ways  being  church.  The  project  participants,  diocesan  leaders  responsible  for  several  congregations,  were  able  to  let  go  of  traditional  assumptions  about  what  constitutes  church  and  began  implementing  prototypes  embodying  their  emerging  vision  including  starting  a  new  congregation  in  a  home.  The  core  concepts  of  systems  theory  helped  move  the  group  from  fixing  problems  to  focusing  on  the  future  that  was  emerging  and  taking  concrete  steps  towards  implementation.
