요약 : I explore what individual and household demographic and demographic factors are associated with gender differences in access to education in the eastern state of West Bengal. Access to education will be viewed in terms of school attendance and risk of dropping out of school for boys and for girls.
초록/해제
요약 : I use cross-sectional household data collected by the National Sample Survey Organization of India in 1995-1996 on participation of persons in the age group of 5-24 years in the formal education system (N=10808).

요약 : Poor access to education is a problem in much of the developing world, with many nations, particularly those from South Asia, Sub-Saharan Africa and the Middle East, suffering from large gender gaps in education and low female literacy (Cavicchioni, 2002). Gender gaps in education are detrimental to the socio-economic development of any nation, because women's education is associated with numerous positive outcomes at household and national levels. These outcomes include better health, lower infant mortality, lower maternal mortality, improved nutrition and sanitation practices, smaller families, and an increased likelihood of children, especially girls, accessing education (King & Hill, 1993; Oxfam, 2000; Summers, 1994; UNICEF, 1992; World Bank Group, 2000). The gender gap in education in the developed world is only 1% (Cavicchioni, 2002). In comparison, South Asia has the highest gender gap in the world both percentage wise (23%) and in terms of the number of people affected due to the high population density in this region. In this dissertation I analyze education data from one of the states in India.

요약 : Results indicate that the level of education of the household head is the most important factor associated with school attendance and school survival for longer periods for all children regardless of gender and area of residence. Female headed households had a positive impact on school attendance of rural children regardless of gender. Age and gender of child as well as income (per capita expenditure) have an inverse relationship with school attendance. Descriptive findings indicate that parental apathy, financial constraints, and child disinterest are important reasons given for lack of school attendance as well as for school dropout.
초록/해제
요약 : This study suggests the need to focus on strategies to improve incomes of families as well as adult education as a means to encourage child attendance and retention. Further research should also examine the effect of age at marriage on school attendance and dropout.
