요약 : This dissertation explores the career of a pioneer, eighteenth-century Lutheran missionary, Benjamin Schultze, specifically, his work in the Danish-Halle Tranquebar Mission and in the "English Mission" of Madras. Schultze's visionary leadership, evangelistic commitments and linguistic abilities enabled him to overcome various contextual challenges and to proclaim the gospel in three Indian languages, thereby reaching both Hindus and Muslims. His translations of Christian literature, including the Bible and the Book of Common Prayer, and his support of education complemented his evangelistic efforts. Schultze's most unique contribution was his work related to the establishment of the Madras Mission. Inspired by his desire to share the gospel as widely as possible and convinced that Madras was strategically a much more attractive center for European mission activities than Tranquebar, Schultze envisioned and worked diligently to create a cooperative mission which became a model for the missionary enterprise in India and other parts of the world for the next century. In spite of opposition from the Mission Collegium in Copenhagen and wariness on the part of the Halle leadership, Schultze was able to establish the English Mission in Madras under the supervision of and with the fiscal support of the SPCK. The missionary personnel, however, continued to be trained in and supplied by Halle. The Madras Mission thus became a cooperative, ecumenical effort on the part of British Anglicans and German Pietist Lutherans. The Anglicans accepted Lutheran missionaries in spite of their concern about the irregularity of Lutheran ordinations, and the Lutherans continued to supply human resources in spite of their concern for the integrity of the Lutheran confessional heritage. Schultze deserves much credit for making this experiment a reality and encouraging the partners in the mission to overcome their reluctance and suspicion.
