■520    ▼aAffected  by  the  American  millenarian  movement,  the  majority  of  the  early  missionaries  in  Korea  advocated  a  mild  dispensational  premillennialism.  Introduced  by  the  early  missionaries  in  the  beginning,  the  premillennial  understanding  of  the  coming  kingdom  became  the  dominant  eschatological  view  within  the  Korean  Presbyterian  Church.  Premillennialism  in  Korea  was  related  to  the  Bible  Study  Movement,  which  included  the  Bible  study  class,  the  Bible  institutes,  and  the  seminary.
■520    ▼aAt  the  early  stage,  the  premillennial  concept  of  the  futuristic  kingdom  of  God  had  a  negative  effect  on  social  reform,  but  the  missionaries  and  the  Korean  Presbyterian  Church  congregations  and  leaders  alike  showed  an  active  involvement  in  social  welfare  work  in  general.  Thus,  premillennialism  played  a  crucial  role  in  the  growth  and  development  of  the  missionary  movement  of  the  Korean  Presbyterian  Church.
■520    ▼aThis  dissertation  is  a  historical  study  of  the  premillennial  eschatology  of  the  Korean  Presbyterian  Church  with  respect  to  its  millennial  movement  during  the  period  of  1884  to  1945.  Based  on  four  research  questions,  it  is  arranged  in  four  main  parts.  The  first  part  deals  with  the  millenarian  background  of  the  early  missionaries  to  Korea.  The  second  examines  the  doctrinal  aspect  of  premillennialism  of  the  Korean  Presbyterian  Church.  The  third  covers  the  impact  of  the  premillennialism  of  the  Korean  Presbyterian  Church  on  the  missions  with  respect  to  its  evangelistic,  medical,  educational,  and  Bible  training  ministries.  The  fourth  concerns  the  correlation  between  the  premillennial  eschatology  of  the  Korean  Presbyterian  Church  and  social  reform.
■520    ▼aWith  the  expectation  of  Christ's  imminent  coming,  the  premillennial  hope  gave  a  new  note  of  urgency  to  evangelism.  The  Proclamation  of  the  gospel  as  the  primary  missions  motivation  was  emphasized.  The  premillennial  eschatology  of  Korean  Prebyterianism  provided  an  ongoing  motivation  for  evangelism  and  delayed  but  did  not  prevent  the  fuller  development  of  medical  and  educational  work.
