요약 : Emerging literature on the relationship between psychologists and clergy members (priests, rabbis, ministers, etc.) has begun to articulate factors that might facilitate creative collaboration between the two professions. Thus, many recommendations have been made for psychologists who seek to work closely with clergy. Missing from this research are clergy's candid perceptions of psychologists and examples of positive and negative collaboration, specifically those of Episcopal priests. The purpose of this qualitative exploratory study is to reveal the attitudes of clergy from the Episcopal faith regarding collaboration with psychologists in order to help psychologists better understand their viewpoints. Such understanding will promote deeper and more successful collaborative efforts between the two.

요약 : In order to expand the current knowledge, eight Episcopal clergy in the Southeastern United States were recruited to participate in an focused, semi-structured discussion group that addressed issues related to their attitudes toward and experience working with clinical psychologists. Thematic analysis of the data resulted in seven major themes, which are organized and presented along with illustrative quotes.

요약 : In sum, clergy often serve as front-line mental health workers and face a wide range of issues, including severe mental health disorders. Further, it was found that the counseling training provided in seminary, with the exception of the CPE program, is largely inadequate, and any further competency must be sought outside of seminary, in the community. Thus, clergy practice counseling with varying levels of competence and comfort, relying largely on a sense of intuition or prayerful reflection. They express a wish, as well as a need, for collaboration with psychologists. However, despite their intentions, and despite their Protestant-Episcopal backgrounds and liberal theological outlooks, participants collaborate with psychologists at rates that fall short of their own wishes or needs. Furthermore, the collaboration that actually takes place is generally of a non-creative, unilateral nature. Factors are identified that both inhibit and facilitate effective collaboration, and examples of collaboration, from the experience of participants, are provided.

요약 : In the final chapter, relevant findings are interpreted as they relate to the existing literature, recommendations for future research are discussed, and implications for clinical practice and education are explored.
