■520    ▼aThe  project  concludes  with  a  brief  exploration  of  why  it  is  in  the  best  interest  of  Christians  to  support  America's  pluralist  and  liberal  democratic  structures.  It  therefore  points  to  the  tenuous  nature  of  the  religious  liberties  enjoyed  by  America's  citizenry.  It  also  argues  that  there  are  good  reasons  to  be  found  within  certain  Protestant  theological  traditions  for  upholding  the  institutionalized  tolerance  and  individual  liberties  guaranteed  by  the  United  States  Constitution.  What  this  means  is  that,  despite  some  recent  claims  to  the  contrary,  the  virtues  of  tolerance  and  civility  do  not  reflect  the  "liberal"  corruption  of  the  Christian  Gospel,  but  are  instead  fully  consistent  with  a  Christian  anthropology  and  politics.
■520    ▼aThis  dissertation  analyzes  the  risks  and  rewards  of  specifically  religious  forms  of  political  reasoning  within  America's  liberal  and  multicultural  society.  Toward  that  end,  the  project  begins  with  an  exploration  of  several  "liberal"  proposals  for  the  expulsion  of  religious  argumentation  from  America's  public  squares.  The  project  also  addresses  various  arguments  from  within  American  Christianity  concerning  the  dangers  of  a  too  robust  engagement  with  the  dominant  political  culture.  In  responding  to  both  of  these  lines  of  argumentation,  the  dissertation  points  out  that  religious  voices  can,  at  times,  convince  others  without  resorting  to  coercion.  What  is  more,  religious  subgroups  represent  an  essential  aspect  of  America's  political  dialogues  in  that  they  often  give  voice  to  otherwise  voiceless  groups  within  local  and  national  politics.
