■520    ▼aThe  purpose  of  this  study  is  to  develop  a  better  understanding  of  America's  early  settlers'  contributions  and  to  establish  a  historical  perspective  against  which  twenty-first  century  America  can  be  viewed.  Using  a  broad  range  of  prior  historical  research,  this  thesis  explores  the  motivations,  values,  and  spiritual  beliefs  of  the  Pilgrims,  Puritans,  and  Quakers,  with  conclusions  drawn  about  the  lasting  impact  of  each  group.  Though  America  has  changed  significantly  in  nearly  four  centuries'  time,  many  of  the  challenges  are  the  same:  how  to  balance  individual  freedom  with  the  needs  of  the  common  good;  how  to  assimilate  immigrants  without  fear  of  cultural  contamination;  how  to  willingly  embrace  the  change  that  will  inevitably  come  and  trust  that  the  future  will  unfold  as  it  should.  As  Americans  of  English  descent  anticipate  the  imminent  loss  of  their  long-time  majority  status,  they  will  be  well  served  by  the  lessons  of  those  who  came  before.
