초록/해제
요약 : Before 1870, the Protestant church determined the moral vision of the United States, viewing its values as essential to the success of American democracy at home and its expansion abroad. But after the 1870s domestic labor unrest forced Protestant leaders to launch a crusade to evangelize the nation's cities. Armed with the Bible and social science methodology, Protestants implemented Americanization campaigns to win over the nation's immigrants. Catholicism, with its centralized structure, threatened the Protestant campaign to "win America for Christ." Building upon its numerical strength and the development its own middle class, Catholics challenged evangelical operations. As this religious battle intensified, Mexicans entered the United States providing a new reservoir of unskilled labor. Protestants and Catholics competed for the Mexican soul, which in a larger sense would represent the victory of one communion over the other in the battle for the city. The situation in Chicago affords a prime example of the religious, social, and racial ramifications of this struggle, and of the different approaches taken by Protestant and Catholic churches. Chicago's Protestant churches utilized an already well-developed institutional church network and a variety of social service programs to win over these new residents. The Archdiocese of Chicago was initially ill prepared to meet the needs of this new immigrant group, but was forced to react when Protestant proselytization of the Mexicans became overt. To combat Mexican "leakage," the Chicago Catholic Church enlisted the support of the Irish middle class and invited the Claretian Order into the archdiocese. But it took the Great Depression to change the city's religious landscape; Protestants lost active members and in turn, their financial base. Catholics, allied with the New Deal, obtained federal assistance to continue church-sponsored programs. They also replicated Protestant models to unite their diverse ethnic flock. Protestants, split by creedal differences and unwilling to accept federal funding, were beaten at their own game. Using often overlooked sources, including newspaper accounts and religious archives, this dissertation provides a new perspective on the conflict between urban churches as each sought to claim the Mexican for its Christ.
