초록/해제: 요약 : This study asked to what degree intercessory prayer had an impact on the psychospiritual well-being of students attending two seminaries in Ohio, where "psychospiritual well-being" is viewed in terms of (1) depressive symptoms and (2) spiritual well-being. The question was examined as follows: Twenty-nine seminarians were assessed for depression and spiritual well-being via the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) and the Spiritual Well-Being Scale (SWBS). Participants were then randomly divided into two groups. The students in the "treatment group" received intercessory prayer over a three month period from individuals who were recruited to serve as intercessors for the study. The remaining students comprised a control group (receiving no intercessory prayer from the study's intercessors). At the end of the treatment period, all participants were given the tests which were administered at the time they entered the study. Test data were analyzed. The primary analysis concerned differences in pre-and posttest scores. Statistical hypothesis tests ( t-tests) indicated a significant difference between the treatment group's BDI and SWBS scores from pretest to posttest. No such difference was found for the control group. The results suggest that intercessory prayer had a positive effect on participants' psycho-spiritual well-being. The study is consistent with other studies which found that intercessory prayer is effective.
