■520    ▼aChapter  I  addresses  the  challenges  that  are  facing  the  mainline  Protestant  churches  including  population  changes  and  the  decline  of  Christianity  in  the  United  States.  The  mainline  churches  are  facing  in-between  times  requiring  a  re-imagining.  Membership  in  the  mainline  churches  has  been  declining  since  the  1960's,  and  churches  are  seeking  ways  to  transform.  The  Christian  faith  points  us  toward  a  counter-cultural  view  that  we  belong  to  God.  Preaching  is  an  important  part  of  transformation  and  calling  people  into  the  presence  of  God.  One  approach  to  transformation  is  to  become  a  faith  based  missional  church.
■520    ▼aChapter  II  explores  the  events  and  challenges  that  have  shaped  the  generations  worshipping  in  our  churches  today.  We  still  have  members  of  the  G.I.  generation  (born  before  1925)  worshipping  in  our  congregation,  but  for  the  purposes  of  this  project  the  generations  that  will  be  participating  include  the  Silent  Generation  (born  between  1925  and  1945),  the  Boomers  (born  between  1946  and  1964),  the  Generation  X'ers  (born  between  1965--1983),  and  the  Millennials  (born  after  1983).  Preaching  to  post-moderns  will  be  introduced  in  this  Chapter.
■520    ▼aChapter  III  shares  preaching  expectations  of  our  four  generations  and  challenges  facing  pastors  in  the  mainline  churches.  The  chapter  review  homiletic  strategies  and  obstacles  facing  preachers  in  the  postmodern  world.  Postmoderns  are  seeking  meaning  and  purpose  in  their  lives  and  concerns  have  developed  about  addressing  those  issues  in  the  sermon.  My  hypothesis  is  that  preaching  can  make  a  positive  difference  when  we  properly  engage  the  generations  in  our  sermons  and  make  the  gospel  message  come  alive  and  become  relevant  in  their  lives.
■520    ▼aChapter  IV  presents  the  development  of  the  initial  questionnaire  that  was  used  to  assist  me  in  preparing  my  sermons  for  the  project.  Results  and  observations  from  the  initial  questionnaire  are  reviewed  and  applied  to  sermon  development.  Six  sermons  were  presented  to  volunteers  from  each  of  the  four  generations  and  the  results  of  the  after  questionnaires  are  discussed.
■520    ▼aChapter  V  reveals  the  focus  and  the  function  of  each  of  the  sermons  were  indeed  understood  by  the  members  of  each  of  the  generations.  The  participants  stated  stories  and  illustrations,  video  clips,  and  a  skit  proved  helpful  to  them  in  understanding  the  scripture.  The  project  should  be  helpful  in  the  development  of  future  sermons.
