초록/해제
요약 : Chapter II focuses on the relation of narrative to the moral concepts of social groups and individuals. Issues concerning freedom, autonomy, and relativism are identified and discussed. I argue that, while attention to narrative is important, there are some universal features of morality which are not narrative-dependent.
초록/해제
요약 : Chapter IV is a discussion of the problematic relation between scripture and ethics. After surveying some of the traditional uses of scripture in ethics, I consider the suggestion that a narrative construal of scripture is the most adequate approach.
초록/해제
요약 : Chapter V examines the theological and social ethics of Stanley Hauerwas, the foremost contemporary proponent of narrative- or story-based Christian ethics. The philosophical issues discussed in Chapter II reemerge along with certain distinctly theological issues: sanctification and the relation between the church and the society of which it is a part.
초록/해제
요약 : In a Conclusion, I offer my assessment of the usefulness of narrative in theological ethics. Though it is a necessary focus, attention to narrative does not exhaust the methodological agenda. Narrative, by itself, does not generate a comprehensive account of the Christian moral life.
초록/해제
요약 : In Chapter I, I discuss Alasdair MacIntyre's proposal that the history of moral philosophy be understood as a narrative. Both the logic of the development of ethical theory and the plausibility of any particular ethical theory depend, according to MacIntyre, upon their being located within an historical narrative.
초록/해제
요약 : In Chapter III, I explore the claim that narrative is fundamental to theological method. Divergent theological uses of narrative are classified as belonging to either a liberal-universalistic tradition of a Barthian-particularistic tradition.
초록/해제
요약 : The role of narrative or story in shaping self-understanding has become a topic of conversation in moral philosophy and in theology. The literature generated by these discussions is both rich and diverse. Narrative is understood to mean different things and is used in different ways. It is the task of this dissertation to sort out and explore the various claims made on behalf of narrative. My principal objective is to investigate the usefulness of narrative for the methodology of Christian theological ethics.
