요약 : This dissertation seeks to understand the means and the effects of pastoral counseling attempt to relate itself to the Christian tradition in a therapeutic culture, where people are themselves dislocated from religious and civic traditions. First, I begin the work with a description of an anomalous behavior which I identify as pastoral counseling's identity crisis. Second, I form a tentative hypothesis concerning the factors that contribute to this crisis, namely, that pastoral counseling's identity crisis cannot be adequately understood unless we consider its theological roots. Third, with the aid of a typology of three theological paradigms proposed by George A. Lindbeck, I move beyond description of the crisis to an analysis of the conflicting theological paradigms, viz., the cognitive-propositional and experiential-expressive paradigms, which constitute the heart of pastoral counseling's identity crisis. Fourth, I test my hypothesis by using it to critique the work of Don S. Browning as it is presented in The Moral Context of Pastoral Care and Religious Ethics and Pastoral Care. Finally, I propose a new theological paradigm, the cultural-linguistic paradigm, for pastoral care and counseling which seems better able not only to demonstrate, but to embrace the autonomy of tradition as the basis of care that is distinctively pastoral.

요약 : This study examines the "identity crisis" of modern pastoral counseling, broadly defined as pastoral counseling's loss of its theological tradition and its uncritical accommodation to psychotherapy. The inquiry emerges from the observation that the loss of pastoral counseling's tradition and the affinity for psychotherapeutic models is more complex than a simple substitution of one for the other. Pastoral counseling is both attracted to and suspicious of psychotherapy. Understanding the mutual attraction and avoidance of pastoral counseling and psychotherapy reveals a rich theological substrate that raises fundamental questions about the nature of care and the reality of the human self.
