■520    ▼aChapter  one  examines  the  causes  of  communication  problems  between  the  members  of  various  subcultures.  Chapter  two  considers  various  methods  of  developing  speaker  credibility  in  a  cross-cultural  setting.  Chapter  three  examines  methods  of  accommodating  the  language  and  content  of  the  message  in  order  to  make  it  culturally  acceptable  to  the  audience.  Chapter  four  considers  certain  related  principles  of  cross-cultural  communication  which  can  help  the  preacher  to  cross  subcultural  barriers.
■520    ▼aDuring  the  last  three  decades,  various  cultural  forces  have  produced  a  dramatic  increase  in  subcultural  influences  within  American  society.  Along  with  this  increase,  there  has  been  a  growth  in  communication  problems  between  many  American  subcultures.  This  development  has  presented  a  significant  challenge  to  the  American  preacher.  The  forces  which  can  divide  American  subcultures  can  also  divide  the  preacher  from  an  audience  whose  subcultural  characteristics  are  different  from  his  own.  The  science  of  cross-cultural  communication  may  give  direction  to  the  preacher  as  he  attempts  to  bridge  the  cultural  differences  between  himself  and  the  audience.  This  study  examines  various  principles  of  cross-cultural  communication  which  can  be  applied  to  the  preacher's  attempt  to  address  the  growing  subcultural  influences  within  American  society.
■520    ▼aThe  study  concludes  that  without  the  purposeful  attempt  to  accommodate  the  preacher's  message  and  delivery,  the  American  pulpit  will  develop  decreased  influence  in  the  years  to  come.  The  effort  to  accommodate  must  begin  with  the  preacher,  but  every  local  church  and  each  denomination  must  also  participate  in  the  task.  The  study  lists  the  more  relevant  principles  of  cross-cultural  communication.  It  suggests  areas  for  future  study.  It  concludes  that  with  an  attempt  at  cross-cultural  accommodation  by  those  in  the  American  pulpit,  there  is  a  hope  that  the  trend  toward  decreasing  Christian  influence  within  various  American  subcultures  can  be  reversed.
■520    ▼aThere  have  been  many  contributors  to  the  study  of  cross-cultural  communication.  Missiology  has  provided  considerable  insight  into  the  problem.  Secular  studies  have  been  performed  in  an  attempt  to  aid  those  within  the  political  and  commercial  realm.  This  study  considers  each  of  these  sources  in  the  attempt  to  determine  the  relevance  of  cross-cultural  communication  principles  in  preaching  to  subcultures.
