요약 : Barth's use of election as the theme for his doctrine of God in volume II/2 of the Church Dogmatics constitutes the focal text for this investigation. This theological motif is pursued throughout its exposition in the rest of the Church Dogmatics and significant other writings by Barth. Barth chose Romans 9-11 as the key text for his biblical analysis and so his exegesis of that text poses the primary paradigm for appraisal of his biblical interpretation. Pivotal secondary sources are used to inform and guide this evaluation.

요약 : The dissertation proposes that Barth's endeavor to transcend the issues of theological methodology by expressing theology as an internal reflection of divine character fails. His analysis of Romans 9-11 palliated the human response correlative with divine initiative which is necessary for communication between God and humanity. Election as a call to community, rather than as an inescapable, eternal, divine choice holds greater promise as an expression of the word of God.

요약 : The introduction provides a definition of what is meant by the term 'theological hermeneutic'. It employs a sketch of the philosophy of hermeneutics since Immanuel Kant and a brief history of the doctrine of election. The first chapter of the dissertation establishes election as a controlling theological hermeneutic for Barth. Part two reveals how typology, dialectics, and narrative served Barth as expository structures for exegeting the text of Romans 9-11. The final segment examines the Christology which resulted from Barth's theological procedure. The conclusion considers the viability of his attempted answer to the issues of theological prolegomena and presents suggestions for employing the concept of election in contemporary theological exposition.

요약 : This dissertation comprises an examination of the theological hermeneutic of Karl Barth. His use of biblical exegesis in formulating dogmatics is evaluated. The study is not restricted to his exegetical methodology; however, it incorporates appraisal of his doctrine of God under the rubric of election as an integral component of investigation. Barth's proposition that hermeneutics cannot separate content from methodology is accepted and forms the presupposition for analysis of his writings. The study therefore adjudicates both the theological and methodological procedures of Barth.
