■520    ▼aAn  incarnational  approach  to  contextualization  affirms  the  beliefs,  customs,  and  cultural  life  of  the  Korean  people,  but  also  demands  judgment  and  discernment.  As  a  result,  the  writer  proposes  models  for  newly  contextualized  worship  services  for  the  Presbyterian  Church  of  Korea.  Lunar  New  Year's  Day  can  be  celebrated  as  a  covenant  service  with  baptismal  renewal  and  Holy  Communion  in  relation  to  Lent,  a  baptismal  and  penitential  season.  Hansik  can  be  celebrated  as  the  time  for  ancestral  memorial  services  in  relation  to  the  Easter  season  with  the  concept  of  the  communion  of  saints.  Chu-Sok  should  be  celebrated  as  the  indigenous  Thanksgiving  festival,  instead  of  the  American  November  Thanksgiving  which  was  introduced  by  early  American  missionaries.
■520    ▼aFrom  the  particular  point  of  view  of  the  Lord's  Day  as  the  center  of  the  Christian  calendar,  Chapter  2  examines  the  significance  of  Christian  festivals.  In  the  formation  of  the  Christian  calendar,  two  cycles  claim  attention:  the  weekly  cycle  of  Sunday  to  Sunday;  and  the  annual  cycles  which  center  on  Christmas  and  Easter.  In  Chapter  3,  the  writer  investigates  traditional  Korean  festivals  to  be  related  to  the  Church  calendar.  Here,  the  writer  details  the  origins  and  meanings  of  the  customs,  beliefs,  and  rituals  of  three  traditional  festivals--the  Lunar  New  Year's  Day,  Hansik,  and  Chu-Sok.  Chapter  4  analyzes  these  festivals,  which  are  related  to  the  Christian  calendar,  in  light  of  biblical  norms.
■520    ▼aIn  Chapter  5,  the  writer  proposes  appropriate  biblical  passages  for  the  critical  contextualization  of  these  traditional  festivals  for  the  Presbyterian  Church  of  Korea  according  to  the  Revised  Common  Lectionary  (1992).  The  writer  concludes  the  dissertation  with  some  implications  for  critical  contextualization  in  the  Presbyterian  Church  of  Korea.
■520    ▼aThis  study  contributes  to  the  developing  dialogue  between  the  Presbyterian  Church  of  Korea  and  its  non-Christian  culture  by  using  more  effectively  the  Christian  calendar  and  its  related  lectionary  system.  In  approaching  this  study,  the  writer's  interest  is  primarily  in  contextualizing  traditional  Korean  festivals  in  relation  to  the  traditional  Christian  Year  for  the  Presbyterian  Church  of  Korea.  A  method  of  "Critical  Contextualization"  is  adopted  in  the  present  research  to  analyze  and  contextualize  the  Korean  cultural  festivals.  The  method  examines  such  festivals  and  celebrations  with  regard  to  their  meaning  and  function  in  that  society,  and  then  interprets  them  in  light  of  biblical  norms.
