■520    ▼aA  relatively  small  sample  of  professionals  in  the  Puget  Sound  area  were  surveyed.  Multiple  perspectives  were  sought  by  sending  surveys  to  mental  health  professionals,  legal  professionals,  and  pastoral  counselors.  The  surveys  were  analyzed  only  if  the  respondent  had  experience  working  with  ritual  abuse  victims.
■520    ▼aA  review  of  the  literature  for  this  dissertation  covers  the  topics  of  memory,  religious  issues,  origins  of  rituals,  and  the  meaning  of  rituals.  The  findings  related  to  ritual  abuse  are  analyzed  and  summarized.
■520    ▼aIt  is  concluded  that  ritual  abuse  is  not  performed  by  one  homogeneous  group  but  rather  there  are  many  cultures  and  religions  that  appear  to  have  secret  rituals.  Some  groups  that  abuse  children  have  been  in  existence  thousands  of  years.  It  was  also  concluded  that  memory  is  affected  by  many  factors  such  as:  age  of  the  trauma,  betrayal,  internal  conflicts,  and  obstruction  of  expression.  Children  younger  than  three  do  not  have  autobiographical  memory  but  they  do  have  strong  memories  that  are  somatic,  or  visual,  or  behavioral.  The  survey  respondents  suggest  that  each  case  be  individually  studied  and  over  time.  Some  memories  over  time  become  more  understandable,  some  memories  go  from  least  traumatic  to  most  traumatic.  Some  memories  may  be  inaccurate,  but  this  however  is  also  true  of  both  ordinary  and  traumatic  memory.

■520    ▼aThe  subject  of  ritual  abuse  has  created  controversy.  It  is  the  most  bizarre  and  violent  form  of  abuse.  Mental  Health  Professionals,  Pastoral  Counselors  and  Legal  Professionals  are  faced  with  this  controversy,  as  well  as  the  controversy  around  "false  memories."  Who  has  time  to  sort  through  the  misinformation  that  flashes  across  the  TV  or  is  written  in  magazines?  Even  given  the  time,  little  research  is  available  on  ritual  abuse  and  what  is  available  in  the  literature  varies  depending  on  the  author's  religious  point  of  view.
