■520    ▼aIn  this  rhetorically  crafted  paragraph,  Peter  cites  the  OT  five  times.  All  five  citations  are  taken  from  the  early  chapters  of  Genesis  and  are  categorized  as  allusions:  (1)  the  disobedient  angels  (2  Pet  2:4  =  Gen  6:1--4);  (2)  the  Flood  (2  Pet  2:5  =  Genesis  6--9);  (3)  Noah  (2  Pet  2:5  =  Genesis  6--9);  (4)  Sodom  and  Gomorrah  (2  Pet  2:6  =  Genesis  19);  and  (5)  Lot  (2  Pet  2:7--8  =  Genesis  19).  After  a  general  discussion  about  the  use  of  the  OT  in  the  NT,  a  threefold  methodology  is  employed  with  each  of  these  OT  citations.  First,  the  citation  is  established  by  examining  textual  affinities  with  the  OT.  Second,  the  OT  passage  is  examined  and  then  its  usage  is  explored  in  the  rest  of  the  OT,  in  the  writings  of  early  Judaism,  and  in  the  NT  outside  of  2  Peter.  Third,  the  OT  citation  is  examined  in  2  Peter,  highlighting  its  exegetical,  hermeneutical,  and  theological  significance.
■520    ▼aModern  NT  scholarship  has  overlooked  2  Peter  in  part  because  of  its  assumed  lateness  and  its  assumed  theological  inferiority.  While  a  few  recent  studies  in  2  Peter  have  challenged  these  critical  assumptions,  most  research  in  2  Peter  still  centers  on  issues  related  to  its  authorship  and  its  relationship  to  Jude.  While  assuming  the  authenticity  of  2  Peter,  this  study  attempts  to  go  beyond  these  preliminary  issues  and  to  examine  the  hermeneutical  and  theological  contribution  of  2  Peter  by  investigating  the  use  of  the  OT  in  2  Pet  2:4--10a.
■520    ▼aSeveral  conclusions  are  drawn  as  a  result  of  this  research.  First,  within  the  argument  of  2  Peter  these  OT  examples  serve  as  proofs  to  demonstrate  God's  ability  to  judge  and  to  deliver  (2  Pet  2:9).  Second,  three  compositoinal  characteristics  of  Peter's  use  of  the  OT  are  identified:  (1)  the  direct  use  of  the  LXX,  (2)  the  employment  of  the  Jewish  judgment  list  schema,  and  (3)  the  use  of  Jewish  traditions.  Third,  the  significance  of  Peter's  hermeneutics  are  explored  as  they  relate  to  typlogy,  current  hermeneutical  and  theological  issues,  and  the  relationship  between  the  OT  and  the  NT.  Fourth,  a  number  of  theological  conclusions  are  identified  in  relation  to  Peter's  use  of  the  OT.  Finally,  a  few  implications  are  made  related  to  2  Peter  in  general.
