■520    ▼aChapter  one  examines  the  background  for  the  investigation  describing  the  roles  of  literary  reconstruction  and  archaeological  data  for  the  reconstruction  of  the  first  century  CE  in  the  Galilee.  Chapter  two  reviews  the  images  of  first-century  Galilee  as  reflected  in  the  secondary  literature.  The  third  chapter  offers  an  overview  of  the  political  and  demographic  history  of  the  region.  The  fourth  chapter  presents  a  comprehensive  look  at  the  artifacts  and  architectural  structures  for  first-century  CE  et-Tell  (Bethsaida).  This  data  is  developed  from  the  author's  primary  research  and  from  a  fresh  summary  of  previous  work  by  other  researchers  on  the  excavation  team.  The  author  organized  the  digital  database  of  small  finds  and  coins  as  part  of  this  comprehensive  work.  The  fifth  chapter  develops  the  implications  of  the  findings  from  the  site  for  the  evaluation  of  the  historical  plausibility  of  various  social  reconstructions  for  the  region  in  the  first-century  CE.  The  conclusion  summarizes  the  extent  and  response  to  Greco-Roman  influence  in  the  Galilean  region  as  evidenced  at  Bethsaida.
■520    ▼aIn  the  study  of  the  cultural  and  social  matrix  of  the  first  century  CE  in  the  Galilee  scholars  have  commonly  prioritized  written  sources  over  archaeological  evidence  because  written  sources  seem  to  contribute  more  directly  to  an  understanding  of  the  religious  beliefs  and  practices  of  a  community.  However,  there  exist  many  competing  views  of  the  "landscape"  of  the  first  century  CE  in  the  Galilee  due  to  the  varying  lenses  employed  to  view  the  textual  sources.  These  differing  perspectives  distribute  along  a  continuum,  reflecting  the  varied  ethnicity,  economics  and  political  climate  that  is  posited  by  the  interpreter.
