■520    ▼aAnother  distinctive  contribution  of  Hebrews  to  the  theology  of  the  New  Testament  is  its  teaching  on  Jesus  as  high  priest.  It  is  important  to  see,  however,  that  his  presentation  of  Jesus  as  high  priest  flows  out  of  his  covenant  theology.  Jesus  as  the  high  priest  of  the  new  covenant  is  the  subject  of  the  third  chapter.  The  final  chapter  investigates  the  sacrifice  of  the  new  covenant,  which,  of  course,  is  Jesus.  Thus  the  writer  speaks  relevantly  and  creatively  to  the  urgent  needs  of  his  readers  by  addressing  the  issues  of  the  person  (high  priest)  and  ministry  (sacrifice)  of  Jesus.
■520    ▼aSpicq  (L'Epitre  aux  Hebreux,  vol.  2,  p.  294)  correctly  states  that  "the  originality  of  the  epistle  to  the  Hebrews  in  the  theology  of  the  covenant  is  to  have  linked  the  (delta)(iota)(alpha)(theta)(eta)(kappa)(eta)  to  the  priesthood  and  to  the  sacrifice."  This  dissertation  is  a  descriptive  analysis  of  this  significant  contribution  of  Hebrews  to  early  Christian  theology.  The  writer  uses  the  structure  of  (delta)(iota)(alpha)(theta)(eta)(kappa)(eta)  theology  to  correct  his  readers'  precarious  understanding  of  Jesus  by  showing  them  that  he  brought  in  the  new  covenant  of  Jeremiah  and  that  he  is  both  the  new  and  final  high  priest  and  the  new  and  final  sacrifice.
■520    ▼aThe  descriptive  work  of  biblical  theology  must  be  done  with  respect  to  the  cultural  and  historical  setting  of  the  original  document.  This  work  is  thus  concerned  to  explore  the  main  themes  of  the  writer  of  Hebrews'  covenant  theology  in  light  of  the  Sitz  im  Leben  of  the  original  readers.  In  pursuing  this  goal,  the  dissertation  is  made  up  of  four  chapters.
■520    ▼aThe  first  chapter  seeks  to  define  the  setting  of  the  Epistle.  As  is  well  known,  there  is  no  consensus  among  scholars  regarding  the  Sitz  im  Leben  of  Hebrews.  Many  of  the  issues  are  difficult.  The  major  thrust  of  this  chapter  is  to  limit  speculation  and  to  thoroughly  examine  the  text  of  the  epistle  itself  for  insights  into  the  original  setting.  Among  other  things,  the  conclusion  is  reached  that  the  author  writes  as  a  pastor  and  theologian  to  a  predominantly  Jewish-Christian  church  somewhere  in  the  Pauline  sphere  of  influence,  probably  in  the  seventh  decade  of  the  first  century.  The  readers  are  in  danger  of  falling  away  from  the  Christian  faith,  i.e.  committing  apostasy,  because  they  have  an  inadequate  understanding  of  the  person  and  work  of  Jesus.
■520    ▼aThe  second  chapter  deals  with  how  the  author  of  Hebrews  deals  directly  with  the  concept  of  covenant  in  his  pastoral  and  theological  argument  for  his  readers.  A  survey  of  the  history  of  the  term  covenant  in  both  the  Old  Testament  and  non-biblical  Greek  is  included.  It  is  Jesus  whom  the  author  seeks  to  explain  who  brings  in  the  New  Covenant  promised  through  Jeremiah.  With  the  readers  coming  out  of  a  Jewish  background,  the  idea  of  covenant  provides  an  excellent  structure  to  present  the  person  and  ministry  of  Jesus  to  alleviate  their  lack  of  understanding  and  its  dangerous  consequences.
■520    ▼aThis  work  is  a  piece  of  biblical  theology.  It  is  a  descriptive  analysis  of  the  way  the  author  of  the  Epistle  to  the  Hebrews  uses  the  concept  of  covenant  ((delta)(iota)(alpha)(theta)(eta)(kappa)(eta))  to  set  forth  an  exposition  of  the  Christian  faith.  This  covenant  theology  is  an  important  and  distinctive  contribution  the  writer  of  Hebrews  makes  to  early  Christian  theology.  The  major  goal  of  this  dissertation  is  thus  to  set  forth  the  original  intended  teaching  of  the  author  of  Hebrews  regarding  the  covenant  and  the  primary  themes  which  flow  out  of  the  author's  treatment  of  the  covenant
