요약 : Reformed sacramental ideas are placed against the background of eucharistic beliefs and practices in the late medieval period, with particular attention given to the use of the eucharist to symbolize the political constitution of communities and authorize social and political arrangements. The Reformed doctrine is then examined from its earliest public exposure in French pamphlets of the 1530s through its definitive exposition in Jean Calvin's vernacular writings of the 1540s and the supporting literature produced at mid-century by Calvin's French Reformed colleagues. The doctrine that came to expression in these years was centrally concerned with establishing a new understanding of the relation between sacramental signs and the sacred reality toward which they pointed, and Catholic critics were quick to point out that this kind of fundamental revision in the understanding of a theological symbol could have a disruptive impact upon the ways common people related to structures of authority. The arguments of Catholic writers are examined, and their conclusions receive some confirmation in an analysis of the use of the eucharistic symbol by Calvinists to direct the religious and political allegiances of the Reformed in France. Although Calvin opposed almost all revolutionary endeavors, the discourse on power shaped in large measure by the sacramental writings of the Reformed provided a symbolic context that contributed to popular uprisings in the 1560s and anticipated some of the basic themes of the Calvinist theories of political resistance of the late sixteenth century.

요약 : This thesis examines the Reformed doctrine of the eucharist as it came to expression in writings directed to an audience of lay readers of vernacular literature in sixteenth-century France and explores the role played by eucharistic ideas in the creation of a broad, public discourse on the relation between the sacred and society and the nature and function of the power deployed upon the social body. It aims to provide some insight into connections between religious symbolization and political perception chiefly by attending to the spread of ideas through the medium of print and attempting to understand the variety of forms the messages relayed through printed texts took on in the context of their popular interpretation.
