요약 : Preaching the catechism was a widespread practice in sixteenth-century Lutheran Germany. Both practical and theological reasons impel an examination of catechetical sermons. Catechetical preaching was a means by which the message of the reformation was transmitted to all, whether educated or uneducated, literate or illiterate. Lutheran reformers believed that the sermon was the means the Holy Spirit used to create faith in hearers. Within this theological framework Lutheran preachers saw knowledge of the catechism as an introduction to the Bible, as the mark of the Christian and as enabling any Christian to distinguish true and false teaching. The preachers sought to present their message simply and understandably and accordingly felt free to vary their forms and methods. The central message of the preachers concerned the divine-human relationship, not morals or mere theological knowledge. This message was intended to transform the hearer's understanding of his relationship with God. The understanding of that relationship in terms of law and gospel shaped the sermons' structure and content. The preachers wanted their listeners to live according to the catechism but this meant the entire catechism, not just the ten commandments. Living according to the whole catechism meant living one's life in a relationship of trust toward God. Examination of individual aspects of the sermons also presents a different picture than that current in scholarship. For the catechetical preachers, the preaching of the law did not mean support of the status quo. Sermons on the fourth commandment show that preachers had an organic view of society in which each group has responsibilities. The preachers spent more time admonishing those in power about their social responsibilities than they spent admonishing subjects to be obedient. They did not advocate mindless or unswerving obedience to authority. Sermons on the seventh commandment were very critical of economic and social relationships. They condemned the practices of the rich and powerful. The preachers' attacks on opposing views had the positive purpose of protecting the comfort faith was supposed to bring to the believer.
