■520    ▼aAfter  examining  how  Latin  Americans  (primarily  scholars)  read  the  Marcan  Passion  Narrative  (MPN),  I  offer  a  reading  of  the  MPN  enhanced  by  the  insights  of  Latin  American  readers.  The  reading  focuses  on  the  ironies  of  the  MPN.  The  study  attempts  to  show  that  an  awareness  of  interpretation  outside  one's  culture  can  open  up  new  and  productive  avenues  of  interpretation,  avenues  that  might  well  be  overlooked  by  reading  the  Bible  without  the  assistance  of  insights  from  outside  one's  own  sociocultural  context.
■520    ▼aChapter  one  covers  the  development  of  multicultural  biblical  studies  in  the  United  States.  Scholars  whose  work  is  discussed  include  Fernando  Segovia,  Mary  Ann  Tolbert,  Daniel  Patte,  Herman  Waetjen,  Stephen  D.  Moore,  Vernon  Robbins,  and  Brian  Blount.  I  give  special  attention  to  the  influence  of  social  scientific  methods  and  literary  methods  in  the  development  and  practice  of  multicultural  biblical  studies.  Chapter  two  summarizes  Latin  American  hermeneutics  and  readings  of  the  MPN.  Scholars  whose  work  is  discussed  include  Leonardo  Boff,  Ernesto  Cardenal,  Jose  Cardenas  Pallares,  Jose  Severino  Croatto,  Jose  Miguez  Bonino,  Nestor  Miguez,  Jorge  Pixley,  Pablo  Richard,  and  Marcos  Villaman.  Chapter  three  begins  with  an  introduction  to  irony  in  Mark  and  the  MPN,  and  the  first  part  of  my  reading  of  the  MPN  and  its  irony  completes  the  chapter.  Chapter  four  is  the  rest  of  my  reading  of  the  MPN.  Chapter  five  contains  analysis  and  conclusions.
