■520    ▼aGiven  the  possibility  that  the  Law  may  influence  the  Book  of  Proverbs,  the  different  texts  are  searched  to  find  passages  that  treat  the  same  topic.  Detailed  exegesis  of  these  passages  is  followed  by  comparisons  between  the  legal  and  Proverbs'  passages,  and  between  the  biblical  passages  and  extra-biblical  ancient  Near  Eastern  literature  that  treat  the  same  topics.  By  comparison  and  contrast  the  paper  shows  that  the  Law  and  Proverbs  share  moral  and  theological  values,  and  that  on  several  topics  the  Book  of  Proverbs  reveals  an  awareness  of  the  Law.  On  these  topics  (i.e.,  the  fear  of  Yahweh,  adultery,  weights  and  measures,  abomination  to  Yahweh,  cursing  parents,  moving  boundaries,  care  of  the  poor  and  weak,  and  lending  on  interest)  the  Book  of  Proverbs  complements  the  Law  by  presenting  motivations  and  practical  aids  for  obeying  the  Law  in  the  individual's  historical  and  social  context.
■520    ▼aSo  many  contrasts  appear  between  the  Mosaic  Law  and  Old  Testament  wisdom  that  the  latter  has  been  called  a  foreign  element  in  the  canon.  The  thesis  of  this  dissertation  is  that  the  Law  and  the  Book  of  Proverbs  relate  to  each  other  on  an  ideological  level,  for  the  Book  of  Proverbs  is  aware  of  the  Law,  shares  its  theological  and  moral  values,  and  develops  some  of  the  Law's  principles  for  the  individual  in  his  own  historical  and  social  context.
■520    ▼aThe  dissertation  examines  the  usual  introductory  biblical  issues  of  origin,  authenticity,  and  date  of  each  body  of  literature.  It  concludes  from  the  relative  dates  of  the  canonical  literature  that,  if  one  literary  piece  influenced  the  other,  the  direction  of  influence  was  from  the  Law  to  the  Book  of  Proverbs.
■520    ▼aThis  study  categorizes  the  points  on  which  scholars  contrast  the  Law  and  wisdom,  and  compares  the  genres  in  each  category  to  discover  whether  they  truly  conflict  with  each  other.  This  comparison  reveals  that  although  the  genres  have  different  emphases,  they  share  common  ideas  and  complement  one  another,  thus  making  it  possible  that  a  relationship  exists  between  the  two  bodies  of  literature.
