■520    ▼aThe  Annual  Torah  Reading  Cycle  and  the  New  Testament  read  together,  in  some  cases,  the  same  Torah  and  Prophets  passages.  This  similar  juxtaposition  of  texts  may  be  coincidence,  the  effect  of  a  broader  tradition,  or  indicate  a  relationship  between  the  Cycle  and  New  Testament.  The  recent  detection  of  the  effects  of  portions  of  the  Annual  Cycle  within  second  temple  Judaic  literature  creates  the  need  to  consider  the  possibility  of  a  relationship  between  the  Cycle  and  the  New  Testament  and  the  significance  of  this  possible  relationship.
■520    ▼aThis  study  is  designed  to  test  the  hypothesis  that  the  Annual  Cycle,  or  at  least  parts  of  it,  dates  from  sometime  before  the  turn  of  the  era  and  established  a  pattern  of  intertextuality  which  shaped  aspects  of  the  New  Testament.  This  study  attempts  to  answer  several  questions,  each  of  which  build  on  those  before  it  inductively.  First,  what  is  the  general  nature  of  the  Cycle?  Second,  what  are  the  problems  and  advances  of  previous  Torah  Reading  studies?  Third,  is  there  evidence  for  the  Cycle  within  second  temple  Judaic  literature?  Fourth,  what  examples  of  Cycle-pattern  intertextuality  does  the  New  Testament  contain?  Fifth,  what  implications  for  New  Testament  theology  does  this  discovery  suggest?
