■520    ▼aThis  dissertation  analyzes  the  mission  theology  and  practices  of  Telugu  Biblewomen,  a  group  of  native  Protestant  female  preachers  in  the  southeastern  coast  of  the  Indian  subcontinent,  who  worked  with  American  Lutheran  and  Canadian  Baptist  missionaries  during  the  colonial  era.  Identifying  the  professional  practices  of  these  women  in  missionary  transcripts  and  locating  them  in  the  cultural  milieu  of  the  Telugus,  this  study  analyzes  the  social  factors  that  contributed  to  the  ideologies  and  practices  of  these  female  preachers  in  South  India.
■520    ▼aThis  study  argues  that  these  women  preachers,  even  while  collaborating  with  Protestant  missionaries  from  North  America  and  their  male  compatriots,  had  evolved  a  distinct  mission  ideology  which  was  evangelical,  contextual,  subversive,  pragmatic,  and  holistic.  It  underlines  the  impact  of  local  worldviews,  gender  experiences,  imperial  environment  and  social  aspirations  on  the  mission  perceptions  and  practices  of  the  Telugu  Biblewomen.
■520    ▼aThis  work  traces  the  roots  of  the  mission  of  Telugu  women  in  the  Telugu  cultural  world  as  well  as  in  mid-nineteenth  century  British  evangelicalism.  Analyzing  the  impact  of  the  changing  social,  cultural  and  religious  landscape  of  the  Madras  Presidency  in  the  late  1870s  on  the  appropriation  of  this  ministerial  office,  this  study  identifies  various  mission  practices  of  Telugu  Biblewomen.  It  then  examines  the  process  of  the  institutionalization  of  this  office  in  the  early  1920s,  identifying  the  factors  that  contributed  to  this  process  and  changes  the  profession  had  undergone.  In  the  final  section,  I  compare  various  expressions  of  the  profession  in  other  regions  of  the  world  in  order  to  demonstrate  how  the  local  dynamics  contributed  to  its  unique  expression  in  South  India.
