■520    ▼aChapter  Five  proposes  the  value  of  Roland  Allen's  biblically-normed  theological  method  for  contemporary  missionary  practice.  There  are  many  positive  sources  of  information  for  missionaries  today  including  Church  history,  missionary  history  and  experience,  contemporary  church  planting  practices  as  well  as  other  disciplines  such  as  sociology,  psychology,  economics  and  cultural  anthropology.  The  challenge  is  to  balance  these  different  sources  in  a  way  that  prioritizes  Scripture.  Allen's  methodology  provides  a  clear  example  of  how  this  balance  can  be  maintained  in  contemporary  practice.  Lessons  can  be  learned  from  many  places,  but  these  must  be  balanced  in  a  way  that  reflects  evangelicals'  confession  about  Scripture.  Furthermore,  the  mission  field  requires  that  the  worker  express  his  or  her  theological  method  in  a  way  that  can  be  understood  and  applied  by  new  believers  and  new  church  leaders  with  varying  degrees  of  academic  preparation.  Allen's  biblically-normed  theological  method  provides  a  simple  model  that  can  be  reproduced  in  other  cultures.  (Abstract  shortened  by  UMI.).
■520    ▼aChapter  Four  examines  Roland  Allen's  writings  to  consider  his  theological  method.  In  Missionary  Methods,  Allen  modeled  a  theological  method  that  gave  primary  importance  to  what  the  Bible  taught.  Allen  added  to  this  step  a  careful  consideration  of  what  the  Church  was  saying  in  his  day,  and  what  the  Church  had  said  throughout  Church  history.  These  views  were  synthesized  and  then  Allen  demonstrated  the  significance.  Allen's  next  book,    Missionary  Principles,  demonstrated  the  same  biblically-normed  theological  method  but  in  a  less  obvious  manner  than  in  Missionary  Methods.  Pentecost,  and  the  World:  The  Revelation  of  the  Holy  Spirit  in  the  "Acts  of  the  Apostles,"    confirmed  the  same  theological  method  with  a  variation  consistent  with  the  topic  of  the  work.  In  Educational  Principles  and  Missionary  Methods:  The  Application  of  Educational  Principles  to  Missionary  Evangelism  ,  Allen  followed  his  topic  of  educational  principles  and  so  his  previous  theological  method  is  not  noted,  but  no  alternate  method  replaced  it  due  to  the  topic  of  the  work.  Allen's  next  two  books,  Voluntary  Clergy  and  The  Spontaneous  Expansion  of  the  Church  and  the  Causes  Which  Hinder  It,  model  the  theological  method  first  found  in  Missionary  Methods..
■520    ▼aChapter  Four  then  examines  Allen's  published  articles,  which  reveal  this  same  range  of  consistency.  Some  of  Allen's  articles  demonstrated  the  same  theological  method,  sometimes  obviously,  sometimes  subtly.  Other  articles  illustrated  portions  of  the  theological  method  modeled  in  Missionary  Methods.  In  some  articles  no  theological  method  was  noticeable  in  keeping  with  the  topic  addressed;  however,  in  these  works  it  is  noteworthy  that  no  alternate  method  was  modeled.  This  chapter  examines  Allen's  writings  and  demonstrates  a  consistency  with  the  theological  method  found  in    Missionary  Methods..
■520    ▼aChapter  One  introduces  the  dissertation's  topic  by  presenting  the  detrimental  consequences  of  basing  missionary  practice  primarily  on  an  authority  besides  Scripture.  While  evangelicals  consistently  confess  a  priority  on  the  Bible,  actual  practice  can  be  inconsistent  with  that  claim.  Scripture  can  provide  the  foundation  for  missionary  practice  but  more  often  experience  or  the  social  sciences  provide  that  base.  Priority  in  balance  is  required.
