요약 : I follow with descriptive chapters of the work of Michael Wolfe, Wajahat Ali, Naif Al-Mutawa, and Zahra Noorbakhsh, and their engagement with the three processes and countering of stereotypes and Islamophobia. I then present an analysis of these examples and argue that the countering of stereotypes with cultural capital as its mechanism attempts to "change the narrative"---a phrase I borrow from Al-Mutawa---of modern social imaginaries. I offer a social media-based model for understanding this transaction of cultural capital, along with potential contributions to the theoretical premises discussed and the fields of anthropology, cultural studies of media, and Islamic studies in general.

요약 : The dissertation is an interdisciplinary work that utilizes methods in anthropology while drawing upon sources in other fields, and begins by discussing the anthropological study of Islam and my interdisciplinary approach. I argue for the use of Talal Asad's "Islamic discursive tradition" when considering the "Muslim" nature of cultural production, and Lila Abu-Lughod's "ethnographies of the particular" when conducting anthropological research. I present a history of Islam and Muslims in the United States, illustrating examples of Muslims' engagement with the aforementioned three processes, and drawing upon Charles Taylor's theory of "modern social imaginaries." I then give an overview of Muslim cultural production in the United States, explaining my use of the term "cultural capital" as defined by Pierre Bourdieu, and introducing the term "media+" to capture various forms of cultural production. I discuss Gary Bunt's "Cyber Islamic Environments" and offer descriptive examples of online media+ using Daniel Martin Varisco's method of "participant webservation.".
초록/해제
요약 : This dissertation focuses on the work of Muslim cultural producers in the United States, paying particular attention to the ways in which they interact with the three processes of 1) relating to the Islamic tradition, 2) building new networks, and 3) representing Muslim communities. It further examines the ways that Muslim cultural producers counter stereotypes about Islam and Muslims through their work. The thesis argues that Muslim cultural producers in the United States utilize cultural capital as a mechanism with which to counter stereotypes about Islam and Muslims.
