■520    ▼aThere  is  a  common  and  quick  association  between  Muslim  women's  oppression  and  Islam  which  has  left  little  room  for  deeper  analysis  of  the  complexity  of  the  elements  involved  in  such  oppression.  Because  the  debate  over  Muslim  women's  oppression  has  been  politicalized  and  become  a  manifestation  of  East  vs.  West  clashes,  little  attention  is  paid  to  the  specificity  of  local  cultures  and  individualized  differences  in  constructing  gender  divisions  and  conceptualizing  women's  gender  roles.  This  study  investigates  the  role  of  local  cultures,  individualized  differences,  and  acculturated  Islam  in  constructing  women's  gender  roles  among  Kuwait  University  students.  Using  a  survey  prepared  especially  for  this  study,  data  was  collected  from  557  students  at  Kuwait  University  in  the  spring  semester  of  2013.  Major  findings  of  this  study  are  the  statistical  significance  of  social  culture,  gender,  parent  education,  mother  working  status,  travailing  experience,  and  media  watched  variables  in  at  least  one  the  two  subscales.
