요약 : Evaluating the relationship between preaching and the health of a local congregation requires research and understanding on several fronts. The questions to be answered are: (1) Does preaching differ between healthy and unhealthy congregations---do rhetorical patterns exist in the sermons of healthy churches that may differ from sermons in unhealthy churches? (2) Does preaching influence a person's decision to get actively involved in the life of the church? To answer these questions, one must first determine which churches were healthy and which churches were unhealthy. Fortunately, groundwork had been laid in this area by Dr. Jim Slack who developed 11 criteria for classifying the health of a church. Additionally, works on church growth and health were consulted to provide support for these criteria and highlight historical issues in church growth. Secondly, a survey was developed by modifying Dr. Thom Rainer's church health survey to focus more intently on preaching and the preacher. Third, sermons were requested to be evaluated for rhetorical patterns. DICTION 5.0, a text-analysis program, was employed to assess patterns in preaching. Other sources in the field of preaching were used to provide insight into style, purpose, and rhetorical function of preaching.

요약 : Once the data was collected, sermons were analyzed and the survey results were tabulated. Several patterns did develop among the healthy church preachers, but few similarities existed in those preaching to unhealthy congregations. The survey respondents from both types of churches answered similarly in many cases, but the discrepancies surrounded questions about involvement in ministry and bringing the unchurched into the life of the congregation. In general, the healthy church sermons focused on people at large and discussed the present realities of a relationship with Christ while the unhealthy church sermons targeted the individual. Members viewed their preacher's style as "thematic" and the healthy church's members used the pastor's emphasis on personal evangelism to invite people to church more frequently. Healthy church members also affirmed preaching as one of the top three factors for their continued involvement in the local church. In other words, preaching did have an impact on the health and vitality of the local church.
