■520    ▼aConversations  were  held  with  six  mothers  and  six  fathers,  as  well  as  three  focus  groups,  all  associated  with  Evangelical  Lutheran  Church  of  American  (ELCA)  congregations.  In  these  conversations,  parents  shared  their  experiences  of  becoming  parents  and  their  involvement  with  their  church  during  that  period  of  life.  The  thesis  comprises  multiple  disciplines.  The  theological  perspective  is  feminist  Lutheran,  with  special  attention  to  Trinitarian  theology.  The  psychological  frameworks  utilized  include  symbolic  interactionism  and  developmental  family  systems,  as  well  as  research  from  Bowling  Green  University.  The  Religion  and  Family  Project  (directed  by  Penny  Edgell),  Building  Strong  Families  Study  (YMCA  and  Search  Institute),  and  the  Religion,  Culture  and  Family  Project  (Don  Browning)  are  utilized  to  explore  the  sociological  connection.  Literature  on  the  spiritual  aspects  of  parenting  by  Margaret  Hebblethwaite,  Bonnie  Miller-McLemore,  Margaret  Hammer,  Nancy  Fuchs-Kreimer,  Rachel  Rasmussen  and  Diana  Garland  are  included,  as  well  as  literature  on  men  and  fathering  by  David  Anderson,  Paul  Hill,  Roland  Martinson,  Gary  Thomas,  and  David  Murrow.
■520    ▼aKey  findings  include  the  use  of  language  by  men  and  women,  the  role  of  the  gathered  Christian  community,  definition  of  hospitality,  and  the  importance  of  defining  the  role  and  status  of  the  family  within  the  Christian  community.  The  study  also  identifies  key  tensions  between  the  role  of  the  nuclear  family  and  the  wider  Christian  community.
■520    ▼aThe  study  listened  to  stories  and  experiences  of  these  parents  and  modeled  how  faithful  questions  coupled  with  active  listening  can  become  spiritual  companioning  to  new  parents  with  spiritual  or  theological  questions  or  experiences.  Study  conversations  are  put  into  dialog  with  traditional  Christian  theological  doctrines  and  current  interdisciplinary  theories.
■520    ▼aThis  qualitative  study  sought  to  discover  if  becoming  a  parent  enriches  the  faith  life  of  a  person,  and  how  parenthood  affects  a  person's  involvement  and  experience  with  a  community  of  faith.  A  secondary  purpose  of  the  study  explored  how  congregations  could  companion  people  during  this  time  of  life.  The  framework  of  this  project  uses  phenomenological  and  narrative  inquiry,  drawing  specifically  on  standpoint  theory  and  grounded  theory.
