요약 : One of the most distinctive characteristics of black preaching is the way it sounds. That the way it sounds holds theological significance for the conveyance of the Word of God is the contention of this dissertation. There is a tradition within African American biblical scholarship which explores culturally devised hermeneutical strategies for interpreting the Word as witnessed to in Holy Scripture. Recognized by signature titles taken from stanzas of the anthem "Lift Ey'ry Voice and Sing," the tradition comprises such works as Stony the Road We Trod by Cain Hope Felder, Yet with a Steady Beat by Randall Bailey, and the New Testament commentary True to Our Native Land, edited by Brian Blount. By using the second line of the anthem's first stanza, "'Til Earth and Heaven Ring," I acknowledge continuity with the tradition's principal concern for how African Americans interpret the Word -- albeit in this case the Word as it "rings" through the corporate event of proclamation.

요약 : This dissertation employs cultural and theological resources to develop three key themes -- pain, hope, and freedom -- which together delineate a theological theory of the sense of sound in the black preaching event of the Word. Chapter 1 sets forth the thesis that the certain sound of black preaching emanates through the interstice of sense and sound, including the issues which underlie the origin of this idea and the method of study. Chapter 2 explores the sense of sound culturally by using W.E.B. Du Bois's cultural interpretation of the spirituals to reconstruct the tonal semantic infrastructure from which the vernacular of black preaching originates. Chapter 3 engages the Word-event theology of Gerhard Ebeling to consider the extent to which the themes that compose the sense of the certain sound have their basis in the Word of God. Chapter 4 focuses on discerning these themes in the sound of black preaching. Chapter 5 concludes with a summary of the findings and their implications.
