요약 : As the first section, chapter two looks three existing disciplinary intersections---religion and ecology, religion and cities, and cities and nature---and argues that in order to understand how the relationship between cities and their environments have been perceived, we need to know something about the religious factors that influence our perceptions. This forms the basis for the remainder of the dissertation. Chapter three provides an overview of the area's cultural and geographical history, and functions as an additional background for the following chapters. Chapters four and five then look at the ways nature and the city were perceived during the 1997 flood and subsequent rebuilding. These chapters are based on qualitative research conducted with flood responses. Chapter four, which is predominantly about the period surrounding the flood itself, begins by investigating how God and nature were seen as active agents during the flood and recovery efforts, and then looks at battle imagery and two sub-themes that emerge from it---a struggle between chaos and order, and calls to "keep the faith." Chapter five continues into the rebuilding process itself, and revolves around two motifs: controlling nature and nature as recreation.

요약 : Finally, chapter six concludes the dissertation by returning to the question of how religion, nature and the city interconnect. It first charts out the ways religious impulses are present in the images and narratives explored in the flood responses, and then asks how scholarship in religion, nature and the city might be better integrated. The chapter ends by challenging how current environmental scholarship frames questions regarding the human control of the non-human world.

요약 : This dissertation looks at the intersection of three social constructs---the city, nature, and religion---and the changing perceptions of the urban environment within the particular context of Grand Forks, ND, during and after a major flood in 1997 that inundated the city and overwhelmed the rural countryside. Most broadly, this dissertation asserts that religious factors have influenced how the relationship between nature and the city is perceived in the United States, and have helped to justify the urban control of nature.
