요약 : A certain kind of disenchantment has settled into American political consciousness. A defining feature of our liberal democracy-- the plurality of voices in the public square--produces a persistent tension. Ideally, this tension serves two positive functions. It provides a place where all voices can be heard, and it limits the hegemony of one particular voice. However, as the number of voices in the public square grows, as the volume of those voices increases, and as they become increasingly polarized, fatigue can set in. This is acutely felt when there seems to be no common basis to settle disagreements. In a post-secular age, the unbridled clamor for power to inculcate one's own political view is disenchanting.

요약 : I argue that a critical analysis of the landscape that encompasses the intersection between these two rich traditions reveals that the democratic tradition needs a complementary tradition in order for it to flourish. Democracy needs a tradition that will shape citizens in such a way that they will want to contribute to its continuation. Similarly, the Christian tradition has benefitted from the democratic tradition's emphasis on the equal rights of all, especially in the West where Christianity has been one of the dominant conservative influences on culture. These two traditions are best when they are held in prophetic tension with one another.

요약 : In this dissertation I will argue that the texture of the tension between democracy and Christianity has the potential to draw the best out of both. Utilizing Alasdair MacIntyre's definition of a "tradition" to set the epistemological boundaries of my argument, I map six scholars' attempts to address the relationship between the Christian tradition and the liberal democratic tradition in America. Richard Rorty and Stanley Hauerwas argue for a pure tradition, drawing clear boundaries between Christianity and democracy. Jeffrey Stout and John H. Yoder try to recover the tension between the two traditions by correcting the extremities of Rorty's and Hauerwas's polemics. Michael Walzer and Cornel West argue that we always stand in multiple traditions and thus, the boundaries between the two traditions are sometimes necessarily blurred.
