■520    ▼aFinally,  this  project  presumes  a  close  collaborative  process  between  a  pastor  and  lay  witnesses.  The  pastor  works  as  mentor  and  enabler  to  the  witnesses  so  as  to  allow  them  maximum  opportunity  to  make  a  unique  witness.
■520    ▼aNarrative  storytelling  is  assumed  to  be  the  basic  shape  of  the  Biblical  canon.  It  is  presumed  to  be  especially  appealing  to  lay  people  because  of  the  "storyline"  to  their  own  lives.  The  parables  of  Jesus,  the  unique  narrative  form  of  the  New  Testament  canon,  are  introduced  as  the  primary  vehicles  upon  which  the  recruited  lay  witnesses  craft  their  sermons.  The  lay  witnesses  are  especially  encouraged  to  explore  events  and  episodes  in  their  own  lives  which  are  triggered  by  their  particular  parable.
■520    ▼aPreaching  is  presumed  to  be  human  communication  whose  primary  focus  is  upon  drawing  preacher  and  listener  and  Biblical  story  closer  together.  When  lay  people  chose  to  share  their  faith  in  story  form  rather  than  propositional  form,  good  communication,  careful  listening,  and  real  nurturing  of  the  community  of  faith  take  place.  Responses  from  the  participants  in  the  witnessing  workshops  and  congregation  indicate  such  good  communication  can  take  place.
■520    ▼aThe  project  assumes  kerygmatic  gifts  are  not  the  sole  repository  of  ordained  clergy.  Contemporary  theologians  are  cited  from  their  interest  in  lay-inspired  kerygmatic  gifts.  A  survey  of  the  Biblical  record,  especially  the  Books  of  Acts,  underlines  the  variety  and  vitality  of  lay  witnessing  in  early  church  history.  A  cursory  review  of  post-Biblical  to  contemporary  church  history  suggests  church  renewal  and  lay  witnessing  appear  side  by  side.
■520    ▼aThis  Doctor  of  Ministry  project  makes  use  of  the  narrative,  storytelling  motif  of  preaching  urged  by  Charles  Rice  (Drew  Theological  School),  Edmund  Steimle  (Union  Theological  Seminary)  and  others  as  a  means  of  recovering  lay  witnessing  in  preaching.  A  group  of  lay  people  from  a  suburban  Presbyterian  Church  are  recruited  by  a  pastor,  exposed  to  a  series  of  homiletical  workshops  led  by  him,  and  then  become  preaching  witnesses  to  their  congregation.
