■520    ▼aThe  project  was  carried  out  in  an  urban,  inner-city  community  with  the  counselors  offering  guidance  and  support  to  families  experiencing  bereavement,  hunger  and  health  crisis.  The  writer  ends  by  offering  his  own  definition  of  the  role  of  the  counselor  as  being  a  motivator  to  help  those  in  crisis  to  overcome  the  vicissitudes  of  life  as  they  seek  to  re-enter  the  arena  of  daily  living.
■520    ▼aThe  second  section  of  the  project  is  devoted  to  the  Sociology  of  Pastoral  Care.  The  writer  defines  the  methodology,  the  goal  and  the  role  of  the  individual  in  his  or  her  approach  to  families  in  crisis.  The  writer  reviews  the  techniques  of  counselors  in  the  traditional  crisis  situations  such  as  Developmental  and  Situational  Crisis.  He  then  adds  to  this  the  challenge  of  black  families  and  the  socio-economic  crisis  which  they  face.  He  gives  a  historical  review  of  family  life  noting  the  difference  between  the  nuclear  and  the  extended  family.  He  examines  the  present  aberrations  and  the  breakdown  among  black  families.  The  writer  then  examines  the  role  of  the  Black  Church  as  they  address  some  of  these  issues.
■520    ▼aThis  project  addresses  some  of  the  desperate  needs  of  urban  dwelling  persons  using  the  city  of  Newark  as  its  base.  The  writer  bases  his  assumption  that  Theology  and  'God-Talk'  are  born  out  of  crisis  situations.  Thus  he  builds  his  Theology  upon  what  is  referred  to  as  the  'pillars  of  faith'--namely  Creation,  Fall,  Exodus,  and  Exile.  The  writer  develops  a  rationale  for  Pastoral  Care  on  the  attribute  of  God  as  a  God  of  mercy  and  steadfast  love.  He  rests  his  mandate  for  Pastoral  Care  on  the  shepherding  image  of  the  Old  and  New  Testaments  along  with  the  Incarnational  Presence  of  Christ  in  the  New  Testament.  The  writer  then  demonstrates  from  the  Ministry  of  Jesus  and  the  New  Testament  writers  the  important  place  that  pastoral  care  played  in  the  life  of  the  Early  Church.
