요약 : In this dissertation, I explore the link between mid-nineteenth-century domestic ideals and theological understandings of church structure and practice. I argue two related theses. My broad claim is that one emerging nineteenth-century American Protestant movement--the Disciples--developed its ecclesiology with explicit attention to the particular tensions it perceived between divine commandments and social exigencies, while simultaneously--and not always consciously--imbuing certain cultural ideals with the practical force of theological mandates.

요약 : My second thesis is that early Disciples' theological acceptance of cultural expediency resulted in an unexamined ambivalence regarding domestic ideology that explicitly extolled the virtues of cultural gender roles and quietly ignored those roles when theologically and practically expedient. The Disciples are a good case study for a late-twentieth-century examination of how ecclesial identity draws on and shapes cultural concepts of family and gender roles. And their attention to the interplay of theology and culture poses useful questions for contemporary Christian theologians seeking to develop new ecclesiologies attentive to the same issue.

요약 : The Disciples tried to negotiate the intersection of theology and culture through the development of a theological principle of expediency that operated as a bridging concept between the clear "thus saith the Lords" of Disciples biblical exegesis and the presumably rational structures of culture as they were interpreted by Disciples leaders. What they succeeded in doing was elevating sociohistorical constructs to theological ideals. Their law of expediency leaned dangerously toward a doctrine of simple subjectivity.

요약 : Their experimentation with theological uses of expediency, however, provides a mechanism by which contemporary Christian theologians might develop ecclesiologies that take seriously the faith component of truth-seeking and derive their truth claims from a communal process of spiritual discernment that respects difference. This process involves an intentional practice of seeking truths amidst the sociohistorically-constructed experiences and imaginations of the participants. A contemporary theological principle of expediency, then, connects diverse persons and groups through a spiritual process of creating and recreating the church and its truths.
