요약 : Chapter five reaches the following conclusions. First, if the "traditional family" has biblical origins they are not to be found in any family structure given to us in the Bible. Second, the Christian Right conflates family structure from one era with values from another; with respect to biblical issues and the family this means that they often confuse particular behaviors with certain perduring ideals. Third, with respect to the development of family in America, all models of family are socially constructed and historically located, whereas the Christian Right presents us with a model of family which is fundamentally ahistorical and provides no means of accounting for the natural forces of change. Fourth, in their confusion over structure and values, the Right has created an ideal of family that combines 19th century Victorian class-based values with a class-bound family structure from the 1950s. Thus, I do not think the appeal to family values provides any reliable basis upon which to construct either public policy or ethics.

요약 : In chapter one, the conservative Christians I interviewed speak about "family values" in their own words. Chapter two explores "family values" in the writing of two "pro-family" leaders, James Dobson and Gary Bauer. Chapter three examines the claim that the "traditional family" comes directly from God's plan for family in the Bible, and looks at the theology behind "family values." Chapter four reconstructs four models of family that actually existed at different socio-economic points in American history--the Puritan family, the Democratic family, the Victorian family and the Fifties--family demonstrating that the Right conflates values and family structure from two different periods.

요약 : The thesis of this dissertation is that "family values" is morally normative for the Religious Right; that the Religious Right has made one model (the "traditional family") normative for all social analysis and critique in this country; that this norm is not an adequate one in that it lacks internal coherence; it is not a norm that adequately respects the plurality of American family experiences.
