■520    ▼aIn  an  age  of  revisionist  history,  the  influence  of  religion  upon  the  Protestant  work  ethic  has  often  been  popularized.  Yet  in  many  respects  research  has  only  served  to  reveal  more  ambiguity  than  they  have  answers.  Two  glaring  discrepancies  that  this  dissertation  seeks  to  address  are:  if  Calvinism  positively  influenced  economic  philosophy  and  ultimately  ensured  greater  economic  success,  why  did  Scotland  not  share  in  such  rewards?  Secondly,  what  was  the  difference  between  Luther  and  Calvin,  and  why  does  Calvin  and  his  philosophy  receive  so  much  attention  often  at  the  expense  of  Lutheranism?
■520    ▼aThe  purpose  of  this  dissertation  is  to  analyze  the  historically-perceived  connection  between  true  Calvinism  and  the  cultivating  of  modern  capitalism.  Scholars  who  have  invested  time  in  this  topic  have  tended  to  concentrate  on  the  controversy  ignited  by  the  German  sociologist  Max  Weber.  Few  historians  have  explored  the  original  meaning  of  Calvinism,  the  theocracy  espoused  by  John  Calvin,  and  its  precise  relationship  with  the  foundations  of  western  capitalism.  The  traditional  discussion  and  research  on  the  subject  matter,  among  historians  of  religion,  tend  to  point  to  the  differences  between  Renaissance  economic  systems  which  developed  in  Catholic  and  Protestant  countries,  and  to  the  exclusion  of  true  Calvinism  as  an  influence  on  capitalism.
