요약 : My research contributes to a critical understanding of the challenges, negotiations and tensions that arise everyday as homes as places are shaped by and shape long-term care tasks and routines. The findings highlight many issues that come to the forefront when homes become places of caring including: (1) difficulties in modifying the home to accommodate a child's changing body and care needs; (2) the reconstruction of spaces in the home as families ensure that the child is included in all aspects of family life; (3) struggling with a lack of privacy; and (4) the reality of family members being homebound. Ultimately, this research challenges the way that the home as a place has been theorized in geography and housing studies. Valuable contributions are made to the literature in social and health geography, the health and social sciences literature regarding home and community care, and the public policy discourse that impacts the daily lives of children with long-term care needs and their families.

요약 : Semi-structured interviews in one urban and one rural study area were conducted with the person most knowledgeable with the child's care needs. Grounded theory guided the analysis as the families' experiences and meanings regarding the home as a place of caring were uncovered, compared, refined, and specified. The findings emphasize that the home as a place of caring is dynamic, actively experienced, and that families struggle with balancing responsibilities and activities related to care, home and family. The families' diverse experiences are the result of complex intersections among child, family, home and service contexts.

요약 : This thesis examines the meanings and experiences of the home as a place of caring for families with children who have long-term care needs living in Ontario, Canada. The home as a place of caring intersects government policy, the publicly funded home support service environment and individual and family experience. Families caring for children with long-term care needs at home experience profound changes in the spatial and social organization and atmosphere of their homes.
