요약 : A volunteer sample of 69 abused women recruited from communities in upstate New York completed initial questionnaires and follow-up instruments 6 weeks later. A subset of 25 women participated in a qualitative interview component to provide context for the quantitative data.
초록/해제
요약 : An estimated 1.5 million women are abused by intimate partners annually. There is significant empirical evidence that remaining in abusive relationships has long-term negative physical and emotional effects on abused women and their children. Although women are able to leave abusive relationships, an estimated that 50% of these women return to their partners; and between 1/4 and 3/4 of abused women are unable to leave permanently. This research used qualitative and quantitative methods and a longitudinal design to test the efficacy of the theory of planned behavior in exploring the elements of the complex decision process of abused women with regard to staying or leaving.
초록/해제
요약 : Findings confirmed that the stay/leave decision is a well-considered cognitive process for most abused women and validated the efficacy of the theory of planned behavior decision schema (attitude, subjective norm, and perceived behavioral control) in predicting stay/leave behavioral intentions and behaviors in the 6 week timeframe. A woman's perception of her ability to implement her intention made the most significant contribution to the decision. Data analyses failed to determine specific belief structures underpinning the three decision model components. However, other data analyses pointed to the importance of relationship quality, safety, and children's well-being, as well as the availability of environmental and social supports as factors influencing the decision. Additional data analyses suggested that a woman's contribution to the family income and issues related to ethnicity, particularly being of mixed race are decision factors meriting further exploration.
초록/해제
요약 : Findings validated the decision as a complex, repetitive cognitive process in which abused women actively engage over the course of their relationships once they identify their relationships as abusive. Quantitative and qualitative evidence pointed to significant influence of professional and peer support in domestic violence programs in enabling women to leave and the importance of follow-up services to help women remain out of abusive relationships.
